Living inside outside

The hideaway started off as as a simple fisherman’s house and has been fully renovated and updated by its English owners in a contemporary style using local Sri Lankan finishes; remaining simple and minimal while providing spacious and contemporary living spaces for couples and families alike.  

Kumbuk has a double and twin bedroom with a large family bathroom, a comfortable living room and kitchenand a direct short sandy path to the beach. All our bedlinen is 100% white cotton.   The bathroom is finished in traditional Sri Lankan polished plaster providing a large shower, loo and basin.  It has its own pool and pool house.

The prevailing onshore sea breeze varies in strength but generally provides the hideaway with a cool and airy atmosphere augmented by ceiling fans in all rooms as well as air conditioning in both bedrooms.

The HIDEAWAY

Kumbuk is a two bedroom hideaway, set back but connected to the beach front by a private short path (see the map in the info section). The hideaway is located within the breakwater at the western end of Mawella Beach on Sri Lanka’s beautiful south coast. The breakwater provides calm seas and protected swimming. Its a 150 metre walk to the main crescent beach which stretches for some 1.5 kilometres.

The beach hideaways started off as as simple fishermen’s houses and have been fully renovated and updated by their English owners in a contemporary style using local Sri Lankan finishes.  They remain simple and minimal while providing spacious and contemporary living spaces for couples and families alike.  Kotamba has a large double bedroom (with en suite bathroom), and a kitchen opening onto a large living/dining area.  Kotamba’s living room has two large sofas which can double up as beds.  Kumbuk has a double bedroom and a twin bedded room. 

Both hideaways have good-sized grassy gardens. Kotamba sits on a quarter acre beach front plot while Kumbuk is set back from the beach and has a large garden.  Both have good shady areas provided by trees.  Kotamba has a dining pergola on one side of the house. The holiday accommodation is perfect for a romantic break for two or for a quiet family holiday.

The hideaway is fully equipped for self-catering with china, glasses and cookware.  It has a fridge, gas hob, kettle & toaster.  There are no dishwashers or microwaves.  Our house manager can set up a barbeque for you.  We can provide a cook for two meals a day at no extra expense.  The team are happy to shop for you in the local markets and town, sourcing your ingredients at retail cost plus transport.

Alternatively, guests can book and eat at local restaurants at the nearby hotels including the Halcyon Hotel, Tangalle Beach Club, 5 star Amanwella or Buckingham Place. Hiriketiya also has several restaurants, including Smoke & Bitters which serves excellent cocktails. 

The first and last three photos show the breakwater that protects the hideaways from the waves providing a calm sea for leisurely swimming. It was built to allow the fishermen an easier place to land their boats.

Beyond the breakwater lies the crescent curve of sand, some 1.3 kilometers long. Great for walking, running, swimming and surfing.
